Why I Read Books: Exploring the Benefits of Reading
Hi Folks,
Today, I wanted to write about why I read. Somebody in my book club posed this question to the group the other day, and I found it quite interesting to hear other people's motivations and rationales as to why they read.
Here are my reasons. What are yours? Please share your reasons!
I. Introduction
As an avid reader, I often get asked why I spend so much time with my nose buried in a book. I also read multiple books simultaneously. For me, reading is a way to expand my knowledge, nurture my mind, and escape into different worlds and perspectives. In this post, I'll share some of the reasons why I love to read and explore the benefits of reading.
1. Learning from Non-fiction Books
One of the main reasons why I enjoy reading non-fiction books is to gain knowledge from experts in various fields. Whether it's a business book, a self-help book, or a biography, I consider the authors as my mentors who provide invaluable insights, know-how, and tips. It's fascinating to learn how they overcame adversities in life and what shaped them into the person they are today, especially their experiences before age 17. Reading about people's hero's journeys is like taking a pill filled with precious life lessons. In addition to this, reading non-fiction books keeps me informed about the latest trends, insights, and research in my field and beyond.
2. Enjoying the Beauty of Language
Another reason why I read books is for the beauty of language. I love how authors use words to create vivid images, emotions, and characters. Goethe is my all-time favorite - and the reason why I have been trying to learn German for so many years so that I can absorb and experience the beauty of his writing firsthand. Whether it's a classic novel or a contemporary bestseller, fiction can transport me to different places and times and make me feel a range of emotions. I also appreciate how reading fiction can improve my writing and storytelling skills.
3. Nurturing my Mind with Self-help Books
Reading self-help books is another way I nurture my mind and keep emotional hygiene intact. These books provide practical advice, tools, and strategies to help me overcome challenges, improve my habits, and build resilience. Reading self-help books also helps me reflect on my values, goals, and priorities and make positive changes in my life.
4. Exploring Different Perspectives
I love reading books by authors from different walks of life and various backgrounds. These authors bring unique perspectives and insights that I cannot think of otherwise. Reading books by diverse authors helps me broaden my worldview, challenge my assumptions, and become a more empathetic and understanding person.
5. Improving Cognitive Abilities and Mindfulness
Finally, reading books can also improve your cognitive abilities, including your memory, concentration, and critical thinking skills. When you read, your brain has to process information, follow a storyline, and make connections between different ideas and concepts. This mental exercise can improve your brain's plasticity and help you stay mentally sharp.
Moreover, reading books can also help you cultivate mindfulness and focus. In our age of constant distractions and short attention spans, reading a physical book (and not an e-book) can be a refreshing break from the digital world. With a book in hand, I can disconnect from the distractions of the world around me and immerse myself in a new world of ideas, stories, and perspectives.
II. Conclusion
In closing, reading books has many benefits, from expanding your knowledge and vocabulary to improving your cognitive abilities and reducing stress. Whether you prefer non-fiction or fiction, self-help or literary classics, reading is a valuable activity that can enrich your life in many ways. So go ahead and pick up a book - you never know where it might take you!
